What are Jest, React Testing Library and Supertest?

Practice this question

Definition:

Jest provides test execution, assertions and tools for replacing dependencies. React Testing Library helps test components through behavior visible to users, while Supertest sends HTTP requests to an application for API assertions. They can be combined, but none automatically chooses meaningful cases or guarantees realism.

Key points:

  • Jest runs tests and provides assertions and test doubles.

  • React Testing Library checks UI behavior through user-visible elements.

  • Supertest makes HTTP requests to test a server's responses.

  • Query UI elements by accessible roles and labels where possible, and check HTTP bodies as well as status codes.

Interview point:

  • Name a behavior being verified, not just the testing library installed in the project.
