What is denormalization?

01 Understand02 Recall03 Prepare

Understand the concept

Denormalization stores a fact in more than one place to make common reads simpler or faster. It trades extra storage and update work for fewer lookups. Some copies are historical snapshots, while others must track the current source of truth; those are different consistency requirements.

Important ideas

  • Store a copy of data to make reads simpler or faster.

  • Example: store the purchased product name inside an order.

  • Decide whether the copy is a historical snapshot or must stay in sync.

  • An order's purchased price should normally remain the original price even if the product price changes later.
