What was your role?

Practice this question
Discussion template: use your own project facts, ownership, and measured outcomes. Bracketed text is a placeholder.

Short explanation:

Your role describes the decisions and implementation work you personally owned. Interviewers use it to choose follow-up questions and separate individual depth from team-wide scope. Being precise makes a modest contribution easier to defend than an inflated claim about the whole system.

Key points:

  • “I owned [specific APIs/modules/queries] and worked with [team] on [scope].”

  • Separate your contribution from the full team’s work.

  • Mention the boundary of your work, a concrete deliverable and where you collaborated with others.

Interview point:

  • Be able to explain one owned component in detail, including its tests and failure handling.
