What would happen at 10x traffic?

Practice this question
Discussion template: use your own project facts, ownership, and measured outcomes. Bracketed text is a placeholder.

Short explanation:

A 10x traffic question tests whether you understand how work and resource usage grow. Different parts of the system may scale differently, so ten times the requests does not automatically require ten times the app servers. Start with current bottlenecks, data growth and external quotas, then estimate which limit appears first.

Key points:

  • I would measure the busiest queries, pool waits, CPU and external API limits.

  • Scale the measured bottleneck and verify with load testing; adding app servers alone may not help.

  • Include database connection totals, write contention and queue backlog when considering horizontal app scaling.

Interview point:

  • Propose a load test and measurable capacity target instead of guaranteeing a scaling result without evidence.
