Words made simple

A few useful meanings before you read the explanation.

AI
Software techniques for tasks such as recognizing patterns, understanding language or generating content.
API
A way for one piece of software to ask another for data or an action. A claims API might return the current status of a claim.
RAG
Find relevant information first, then give it to a model to help answer the question. The answer is only as reliable as the information and checks used.
More words from this lesson
Retrieval
Finding and fetching information that is useful for the current question.
Agent
An application that uses a model to choose its next action within defined limits. It can use tools and continue through several steps.
Deterministic
Following steps or rules defined by code. The model does not decide which step should run next in a deterministic workflow.
Persistence
Saving information so it remains available after a request ends or a process restarts.
Durable
Able to retain progress and recover across interruptions. Durable workflows require appropriate storage and retry behavior.

🔴 MUST KNOW · This project ties the concepts together. Policy conditions and example identifiers are fictional fixtures.

Overview

  • An insurance assistant helps authenticated customers understand documents, check claim status, prepare submissions, and reach staff.
  • It combines RAG, exact service lookups, and bounded agent behavior.
  • It does not become the authoritative policy or claim-adjudication system.

Why this matters

Customers describe needs in natural language, while relevant information sits in documents and structured systems.

An everyday example

A service representative explains the handbook, checks records, and helps prepare a form without rewriting company rules.

A technical example

“What is my claim status?” triggers an authorized status lookup; “How do I report damage?” triggers applicable policy retrieval.

How it works

  1. Authenticate
  2. Identify intent
  3. Choose narrow route
  4. Collect evidence/data
  5. Clarify if needed
  6. Prepare validated response or draft
  7. Obtain required approval
  8. Commit through domain service.

Architecture and flow

See the complete diagram below.

The insurance assistant example

A customer checks claim C42, learns an invoice is missing, uploads it, and reviews a prepared update.

When to use it

A client needs connected support and guided intake over real policy/claim systems.

When to avoid it

If the requirement is only claim status, begin with an ordinary authenticated endpoint and optionally a template, not a multi-agent platform.

Interview answer

“The assistant interprets and explains; RAG supplies policy evidence, tools supply live facts, and deterministic services plus approval enforce real business actions.”

Benefits, trade-offs, and production considerations

  • Define product boundaries early: supported products, languages, user roles, data sources, authority, escalation, service objectives, and error behavior.
  • Measure success per task, not conversational fluency.

  • The interface renders safe events and review screens.
  • Node establishes the principal, checks inputs, and applies quotas.
  • The router chooses among allowed task categories; it grants no permissions.
  • The policy assistant and FAQ path retrieve knowledge.
  • The claim assistant uses exact tools and collects missing information.
  • Tool authorization checks tenant, customer, object, and action.
  • Business services own canonical data and transaction rules.
  • Drafts are proposals.
  • Validation and approval gate submission.
  • The durable workflow handles retries and later events.
  • The index is built from approved documents.
  • Memory supplies limited continuity.
  • Observability connects the run to evidence and audited outcomes.
