Words made simple

A few useful meanings before you read the explanation.

MCP
A shared protocol for connecting AI applications to tools and resources. It does not replace permission checks or application security.
API
A way for one piece of software to ask another for data or an action. A claims API might return the current status of a claim.
Tenant
A customer or organization whose data must stay separate from other customers in a shared application.
  • Use narrow tools for fresh data and actions.
  • MCP is useful when approved hosts need a shared discoverable integration, not merely because the model has one function call.
  • Keep the existing business API behind either a direct wrapper or the MCP facade.

Authority: caller identity, tenant, permission, and approval must be established independently of model arguments. A tool should expose a business capability, not arbitrary database or network power.
